Christopher Newport University Mary Brock Forbes Hall Science Building
Newport News, VA
Old Dominion Insulation provided mechanical and plumbing insulation services on the 156,000-square-foot Mary Brock Forbes Integrated Science Building. The building features research laboratories with lab support spaces, classrooms, a 150-seat auditorium-style lecture room, problem-based learning spaces, faculty offices, meeting rooms and informal learning spaces.
The facility includes two large cold rooms for specimen and sample storage; two high-end sterilizers; three large walk-in environmental chambers that allow temperature, humidity and lighting control; seven water purification systems providing research grade water; three movable incubators; two large -80 C freezers; air-handling systems for all levels of biological and chemical research; as well as space for zoological specimen preparation and collections.
Completed in 2011, the project finished on time with zero injuries despite the challenging logistics of performing work on an active, busy campus environment. Old Dominion Insulation contracted with Warwick Plumbing and Heating to perform the work. Whiting Turner was the general contractor.
Forbes Hall houses the Departments of Molecular Biology and Chemistry; Organismal and Environmental Biology; and Psychology.
Old Dominion University Systems Research and Academic Building
Norfolk, VA
Old Dominion Insulation provided mechanical insulation services on the 50,000-square-foot facility. The building features a modern clean room, a lasers lab, two biomedical dry labs and a wet lab, a plasma science lab, a maglev controls lab and space missions lab, a micro fluidics lab, and a dynamic environment simulation lab, as well as four large student projects studios and additional student collaboration spaces.
Construction included the placement of large air handlers on the roof and a large quantity of rooftop duct work, all of which were insulated.
The laboratories in the two-story structure are equipped with sliding doors to facilitate the movement of large engineering equipment in and out of the building.
Completed in 2014, the fast paced project finished on time with zero injuries. Old Dominion Insulation contracted with Comfort Systems of Virginia to perform the work. Skanska was the general contractor.
College of William and Mary School of Business Alan B. Miller Hall
Williamsburg, VA
Old Dominion Insulation provided mechanical and plumbing insulation services on the 166,000-square-foot Alan B. Miller Hall which provides a consolidated facility for the graduate and undergraduate programs of the business school. The building features high-tech classrooms that can be easily reconfigured depending on need for tiered, clustered or flat floor classrooms.
Other components include a 4,000-square-foot multi-purpose room, an electronic trading room / classroom for financial markets courses, a library, a communications laboratory, faculty offices and an outdoor café patio. The building is LEED Gold certified.

The Culinary Institute of Virginia
Newport News, Virginia
Old Dominion Insulation provided mechanical and plumbing insulation services on the two-story, 8,000-square-foot food service education facility. Street-side kitchens and dining rooms visible to pedestrians are a focal point of the building.
ODI’s scope of work included supply and return ductwork insulation, kitchen hood exhaust duct insulation, condensate drains insulation, and domestic hot and cold water insulation. The project involved a significant amount of grease duct requiring firewrap with a two-hour fire rating.
Completed in 2013, the project finished on time under an accelerated schedule with zero Injuries. Old Dominion Insulation contracted with Colonial Webb Contractors to perform the work. Whiting Turner was the general contractor.
University of Virginia South Lawn
Charlottesville, VA
Old Dominion Insulation provided mechanical and plumbing insulation services for the University of Virginia’s South Lawn Arts and Sciences Complex. The LEED Gold certified project consists of an interconnected academic building complex with classroom, office, and commons space. The 120,000-square-foot, five-story facility is considered a signature building on campus. It includes a 250-seat commons building lecture hall, classrooms, seminar rooms, student study lounges, computer lab suites, faculty offices, administrative suites, conference rooms and faculty/student meeting rooms.
The complex features 100-foot-wide terrace across Jefferson Park Avenue connects the South Lawn Project with the Central Grounds. At the south end of the terrace is a circular plaza that sits atop a Commons building, with an exterior stair leading to the garden areas below. Conservatory containing lounge spaces and a café with three-story glass walls is framed by two west-facing porches that serve as entrances to two perpendicular wings of buildings.

Virginia Commonwealth University Snead Hall
Richmond, VA
Old Dominion Insulation provided mechanical and plumbing insulation services for Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Business. Along with traditional classroom and faculty offices, the 145,000 square-foot, four-story facility includes a fully-functioning capital markets and trading room, collaborative learning rooms, central atrium with a student commons and cafe, career services center, center for corporate education, auditorium, tiered case study classrooms and team-building breakout rooms.

Virginia Commonwealth University Brandt Hall
Richmond, VA
Old Dominion Insulation provided mechanical and plumbing insulation services for the 160,000-square-foot, 17-story, high-rise residence hall located in VCU’s Monroe Campus. The building houses 640 students in suite-style configurations. The project includes a 400-ton central plant and four-pipe fan-coil HVAC system.
The residence hall features rooms designed to accommodate double occupancy that include furniture, a sink and mirror in the bedroom space as well as a shared connecting bathroom to another room. The suites are arranged so that four or eight students can share a common living room. A central service desk and mailroom serves two residence towers. The first floor of Brandt Hall has a computer lab, multipurpose activity space and laundry room with a connected study and TV lounge.

James Madison University CISAT Library
Harrisonburg, VA
Old Dominion Insulation provided mechanical and plumbing insulation services for the five-story, 106,000-square-foot facility on JMU’s East Campus. The building combines traditional book stacks and study spaces with open study areas offering views of campus and the mountains. The new library houses JMU’s science and technology collections. The library’s Information Commons, located on the first floor, provides access to information resources, new media and media production technology and support services. The facility is open for 24-hour student use with a secure entrance, computer lab, coffee bar and casual study seating.

James Madison University Bridgeforth Stadium Expansion
Harrisonburg, VA
Old Dominion Insulation provided mechanical and plumbing insulation services for the stadium expansion including the demolition of the existing west stands, removal of the track, and the construction of a two-tiered complex with approximately 14,000 seats. A new, single-tiered North End Zone Grandstand with approximately 5,400 seats was connected to the new West Grandstand. In addition to increasing seating, the expansion included the construction of a larger video and scoreboard, the addition of 17 luxury suites, an 8,000-square-foot club lounge with chairback seating, a 6,500-square-foot press box, concessions, commercial kitchen and commissary facility.
